Just remember what ol’ Jack Burton does…

Just remember what ol’ Jack Burton does…

by Matt Savage

I recently read one of Style’s latest emails in which he suggests using or creating a fictional character to help change one’s game. The thought is that if you pretend or act as a fictional character which embodies the traits that you want to posses then you will have less approach anxiety. After all, it’s not you approaching, it is just a made up character, so because you are not putting yourself on the line then there is no reason to fear the outcome. The best part of this whole strategy is that you can pick a character who resembles a cool pick up artist!

I’ve thought about this concept the last few days and which type of character I would use. I came up with Jack Burton, played by Kurt Russell, from the classic movie, “Big Trouble in Little China.” The Jack Burton character has a number of desirable traits in that he is cocky and funny, confident, adventuresome, and most importantly, he is fearless. To me, embodying this type of attitude would be a tremendous tool for overcoming approach anxiety and stalling out of interactions. Of course, this is not for the long term. It is only to be used to help incorporate certain desirable traits into my own persona.

Just to give you a taste of his brand of attitude, here are some of my favorite Jack Burton quotes:

Just remember what ol’ Jack Burton does when the earth quakes, the poison arrows fall from the sky, and the pillars of Heaven shake. Yeah, Jack Burton just looks that big old storm right in the eye and says, “Give me your best shot. I can take it.”

This is Jack Burton in the Pork Chop Express, and I’m talkin’ to whoever’s out there.

You know what Jack Burton always says… what the hell?

I feel good, and I’m not scared at all. I just feel kind of… kind of invincible… Is it getting hot in here, or is it just me?

Enjoy.
